This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
About four years ago we launched our range of hot sauces called Sidekick at a hot sauce festival in London. There, we met the owner of the first hot sauce subscription box in the UK, which was called Lick My Dip at the time.
They featured our hot sauces in one of their monthly boxes, and we absolutely loved the subscription box concept.
So when, in 2016, he asked if we wanted to take over, we didn't think twice! We loved the idea of giving chilli lovers something new and exciting to try every month.
Describe your box in three words?
Hot sauce heaven.
Where did your box name come from?
We wanted to make sure it portrayed that it was a hot and spicy box and that you would feel the burn in your mouth and tongue. Hence Flaming Licks!
Are you a creator or curator?
We are curators, although we sometimes create a few spicy snacks of our own.
What was your most popular box?
Our May 2018 box was extremely popular. We helped our members discover some fantastic new products like chicken scratchings, a brownie made with the hottest chilli in the world and a sauce called Satan's Sweat!
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
Abel and Cole, Graze, Birchbox and SimplyCook.
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
The Queen. Can you imagine Flaming Licks with a royal warrant of appointment?
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
Freshly cooked dishes with a lot of spice!
What do you love about uOpen?
I think marketplaces are a fantastic way for people to discover new boxes and find what excites them (even things they never thought they needed!). Having one place to go is a lot easier than spending hours online, it makes it so convenient!
