This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
I love Korean beauty, especially the skincare because KBeauty brands always use the most unique and best quality ingredients around. So it's an affordable way to try luxury skincare that would otherwise cost a lot of money here in the UK.
I couldn't easily find KBeauty in British high street shops, so I had to rely on friends who were travelling to South Korea to buy products from Seoul for me over the years.
Also, as I didn't live in Seoul, I wasn't aware of what brands and products were worth trying - this is when I came up with my idea for my Korean Beauty Starter Kit, I wanted to curate a beauty box with a bunch of different skincare products that a total newbie to KBeauty would like.
Describe your box in three words?
I'd say my beauty boxes are: convenient, innovative and modern-feminine.
Where did your box name come from?
It was important for me to encompass the joy and excitement of getting something pretty sent to you and not knowing the surprise in store for you in the brand name too.
I wanted a simple name that people could easily say and remember. I knew the word 'face' had to be in it because my beauty box would focus on face products.
I was also thinking about Asian culture, and I knew that there's a bit of a fortune culture there. Suddenly, the word 'Lucky' came to my mind, and when I combined the two to get 'Luckyface', it just sounded so perfect to me.
Are you a creator or curator?
I see myself as both a creator and curator.
I created the brand 'Luckyface', and everything you see on the website and our social media is all my original content. I love creating things. It's my ultimate passion, and I could do it all day, every day.
But I'm also a curator of KBeauty. I carefully choose beauty products that I believe my customers will love. Everything within my box, I've personally used and loved, and I would wholeheartedly recommend to my friends and family.
I also look for natural and unique ingredients like snail gel and bee venom, which isn't easy to find here in the UK. I also only choose beauty products that have got great reviews within the beauty community, because I think the community's opinion is really important. I never buy anything unless it has good reviews.
What was your most popular box?
My most popular box is the Starter Kit. It's a great intro to KBeauty because it has 4 Korean face sheets in it and five beauty samples (ranging from cleansers to luxury moisturisers).
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
At the moment, I make all the beauty boxes myself. I love handpicking the items and making the box for each customer. I think about the joy they'll get when they open their box of KBeauty goodies!
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
Alexa Chung - she's so effortlessly cool and trendy. I think she'd love Kbeauty.
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
I'd love to add some luxury snail gel products.
What do you love about uOpen?
I love that uOpen is the first subscription box marketplace in the UK. I'm lucky to have joined you in the early stages, but I think subscriptions can only get bigger and bigger from here.
