This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
Jonny (loves stories) and I (loves languages) met when we were at school. Having grown up in Paraguay, languages have always been a part of my life, and I've always loved to learn new languages and experience the opportunities that knowing 2, 3 or 4 languages can give you.
Jonny hated learning French at school; he was sick of the vocab sheets, bored of the stories and terrified of the weekly tests. When we became friends, we realised what drastically different experiences we had, and that there was more than one way to learn a new language.
Combining my love for languages, with Jonny's passion for great stories we created One Third Stories. Through exciting narratives and engaging characters, kids can learn a new language without even realising! Our Clockwork Methodology™ gradually introduces the second language through contextual cues and repetition, making the language learning element of our Story Boxes completely seamless. We've been called "the hidden vegetables approach to language learning!"
Describe your box in three words?
Language Learning Stories.
Where did your box name come from?
One-third languages, one-third culture and one-third stories! Our Story Boxes don't just teach a language or make for a great bedtime read, but they spark a love for learning that we hope inspires the next generation to appreciate the many cultures and peoples of a world that is becoming ever more integrated.
Are you a creator or curator?
We create every aspect that goes into each Story Box - it takes a big team to write, illustrate and produce a new story, audiobook, activity pack and games every month!
What was your most popular box?
People love our first story in the series, 'How The Dinosaur Got His Shoes'. It introduces colours, number and greetings through a curious T-Rex keen to protect his precious feet!
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
We have authors, illustrators, language experts & translators, narrators, graphic designers, editors, printers and our very own Jonny (co-founder) overseeing every box!
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
Personally, I subscribe to Pact Coffee, but as a business, we've seen some fantastic subscription boxes like Bookabies, Mrs Wordsmith and Toucan Box that are doing some great things for children's subscription boxes!
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
The Royal Family would be amazing! How cute would it be to see Prince George, Princess Charlotte & Prince Louis reading stories to one another and chatting away in French & Spanish?!
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
We'd love to be able to box up that feeling of pride when your kids effortlessly make friends while on holiday using the language they've learned. We do our best to spark the love for languages with every Story Box we produce and hope that kids come back to the stories time and time again.
What do you love about uOpen?
uOpen is an excellent platform for parents to discover what's out there for their kids that they may not have even thought possible. Subscription boxes are changing the way parents can access resources and open their child's eyes to the endless possibilities of the world around them.
We love being a part of that movement, and we love creating Story Boxes that inspire our youngest generation to enjoy learning languages, gain a deeper understanding of the cultures around them and have a deeper appreciation for the ever-changing world that we live in.
