This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
Before starting a family, I worked as a software designer for T-Mobile and then Connells Estate Agents. After children, the '9-5' office job, plus commute was not family-friendly, so I quit and starting selling baby gifts. This developed into Mum-to-be 'pamper hampers' and then more and more pampering-type products, and ultimately exploded into a ton of bath bombs - they're sooo popular!
I had a regular pitch on my local market with the bath bombs, plus my website, but noticed I was frequently being asked what was new/special/limited edition, or if I could just "pop a selection together", so I thought 'why not just offer the people the option to purchase a regular mystery box?'... and Soakbox was born!
Describe your box in three words?
Awesome bath bombs!
Where did your box name come from?
It had to be something to do with the bath, and there are already a few subscription boxes in America & Australia already using names along the limes of Bath Box / Bathtime etc. so I went for Soakbox as it perfectly describes what you use the contents for - a soak in the bath!
Are you a creator or curator?
What was your most popular box?
Probably the one that contained a fidget spinner bath bomb - it was great, it floated on the water surface, and yes, you could spin it!
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
I'm just a one-woman-team at the moment (but planning to grow), although my hubby is great for bouncing ideas off and I belong to a couple of networking groups on social media.
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
WhoGivesACrap - a toilet roll subscription box!
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
Jon Bon Jovi - it would be awesome if he subscribed!
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
A bath bomb that was so massive, it could be used in a swimming pool. Not sure Royal Mail would be too happy about it though!
What do you love about uOpen?
It's tough wearing so many 'hats' as a small business owner, so I'm hoping uOpen is going to do some of the advertising work for me, and help me reach new customers.
