This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
Obviously a lifelong love affair with cake, but also a desire to be able to create a work-life balance that worked for our small children and us. We started small with producing only ten boxes, baking from home, and now have over 400+ and rent kitchen premises monthly. Every bake is still lovingly handmade from scratch with minimal ingredients and great flavours. The next step for us is finding premises, eeeek!
Describe your box in three words?
Happy. Cakey. Post.
Where did your box name come from?
Our name is what we are all about! Taste the cake and join the club, baby! Sending boxes of cakey joy that brighten up people's day makes us happy, and having a beautiful group of people that share our passion and love for cake is what keeps us going! Thanks, guys, you are the bee's knees.
Are you a creator or curator?
Creator - all baked from scratch, by us, using delicious, high-quality ingredients, it's all butter in our kitchen, and that's the way we like it.
What was your most popular box?
Chocolate ganache brownie, white choc chunk brownie, jammy Victoria sandwich cake, lavender shortbread and an earl grey tea bag - yum!
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
Vikki and I run things day-to-day, and then on baking weekends, we have three other lovely ladies that help us bake, wrap and pack your boxes! Couldn't do it without them.
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
Currently, Hotel Chocolat and Toucan Box (great for the kids), however, we have tried lots - it's market research after all. You name it; we've tried it!
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
Ryan Gosling! What a dish. I'm sure he could do with some cake (who couldn't?!) and then perhaps we could be best friends, or whatever...
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
Top everything with gold leaf! Love a bit of gold and glitter here at TCTC HQ.
What do you love about uOpen?
Easy to use, makes it very easy to order cake through your letterbox - is your tummy rumbling or is it just me?!
