This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
I've always loved finding and trying wonderfully-aged spirits, my Dad does too, but unfortunately, due to a disability, he can no longer travel himself to find rare beauties from around the world.
A couple of years ago I wanted to find a club that would send him a fantastic bottle every month as a present, importantly nothing that he'd get in a supermarket - it needed to be special.
I couldn't find anyone doing it, so I started doing it myself! Now, my Dad gets a fantastic bottle every month and so do all of our members.
Describe your box in three words?
Aged magnificence delivered.
Where did your box name come from?
Our garden is called Summerton Gardens, most of our photos are taken there, so the Summerton Club stuck.
Are you a creator or curator?
I curate the masterpieces of fantastic craft distillers.
What was your most popular box?
When looking at the reaction of our members, it would either be our Ron Cartavio XO (rum) or Edradour Sherry Finished, Cask Strength 13-Year-Old Scotch Single Malt Whisky.
Ron Cartavio XO was a revelation to our members; many didn't even know that rum is produced in Peru nor that it was that good!
On the other hand, The Edradour is a just fantastic whisky, and with only 705 bottles of that particular beauty bottled, our members knew they were getting something unique.
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
I'm no stranger to having alcohol delivered to my home as I am a member of a wine club or two.
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
All of our members are celebrities in our eyes, they all get the same treatment
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
We'd want to use virtual reality to take our members to the distillery, meet the master-distillers and see their fantastic spirits being crafted.
What do you love about uOpen?
uOpen thoroughly vets the subscription boxes they list to ensure you only get the very best subscription options out there.
