This is part of uOpen’s ‘Meet The Maker’ interview series - your exclusive opportunity to get to know the real people and personalities behind the subscription boxes you know and love, and the ones you will soon come to!
Discover the fascinating stories behind how your favourite subscriptions originally came to be, the marvellous people involved in lovingly creating and curating each box, plus a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps.
What sparked your decision to start up your box and how did you get started?
As a student we are always 'busy', online, studying or going out. There wasn't much time left to take care of myself, and at the same time I discovered the joys of receiving mail - the physical surprise always seemed to boost my mood, but what I received didn't fit with my student life. That's when the idea to create the perfect monthly surprise to bring positivity, motivation and a little comfort to students was born.
Describe your box in three words?
Surprise. Fun. Wellbeing.
Where did your box name come from?
I love names that say exactly what it is - 'Unibox' was decided on instinct. However, you don't have to be at uni to love the box. We have post-grad students and college students who love it just as much.
Are you a creator or curator?
Curator, however, I would say our subscribers have a big say and influence in what's included in each box - we love to hear their ideas and feedback. After all, we create each Unibox for them!
What was your most popular box?
To be honest, we've found that this is subject to an individual's taste, so every different month seems to be someone's favourite - it's hard to say which one was our most popular!
How many people are involved with producing your subscription box?
Quite a few! From sourcing the best products, creating the exclusive items, writing our mini mag, packing and shipping. There are a lot of elements that need to come together to create the perfect box.
Which subscription boxes do you subscribe to?
I've subscribed to quite a lot of boxes over the years. Some of my current favourites are Reading in Heels, Moi-meme, and Book Box Club.
Name a celebrity subscriber you’d love to have as a customer?
Malala Yousafzai, who is a student at Oxford University would be amazing!
If you could put anything in your box, with money or scarcity no object, what would it be?
A onesie - I think that's what was missing from my uni experience. Nothing makes me feel cosier than a onesie. Who knows, maybe we will create a special Unibox onesie one day?
What do you love about uOpen?
Being able to reach new people who might not know about the joy of subscription boxes yet! There is a box for everyone, uOpen enables people to find which ones are right for them all in one place.
